Sidney L.
Abrams was appointed to the CalPERS Board in September 2001 by Governor Gray Davis to serve as the insurance industry representative.
His term expires in January 2005.
Mr. Abrams is Chair of the Health Benefits Committee and Vice Chair of the Benefits and Program Administration Committee.
He also serves on the Investment Committee.
He is an actuary who has more than 30 years experience providing actuarial and consulting services to large multi-employer Taft-Hartley pension, health and welfare, and other employee benefit plans in California and other Western states.
For many years, Mr. Abrams had his own consulting firm based in San Francisco, and was involved in virtually all aspects of the establishment and continuing operation of the plans, including benefit design, administration, investment, and actuarial matters.
He is widely respected for his work as a consultant and has earned a reputation for finding innovative solutions to the problems faced by boards of trustees who administer the plans.
When appointed to the CalPERS Board, he was a trustee of the United Food and Commercial Workers Unions and Employees Midwest Health Benefits Fund and Pension Fund.
He currently sits on the boards of several plans in the retail food industry.
His experience is ideally suited to his role as a CalPERS Board Member.
Mr. Abrams is a graduate in Mathematics from the University of Minnesota, is a member of the American Academy of Actuaries, and is an Associate of the Society of Actuaries.
