Michael Rubens Bloomberg (* 14. Februar 1942 in Boston, Massachusetts) ist ein US-amerikanischer Geschäftsmann und amtierender Bürgermeister der Stadt New York.
Leben
Michael Bloomberg wurde in eine jüdische Familie russischer und polnischer Abstammung im St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Brighton, einem Ortsteil von Boston, geboren. Bloombergs Vater Alexander, 1906 in Chelsea, Massachusetts, geboren, war als Buchhalter in einer lokalen Molkerei angestellt. Sein Großvater väterlicherseits war ein russisch-jüdischer Immigrant und Immobilienmakler. Seine Mutter, Charlotte (Rubens) Bloomberg, geboren 1909, ist die Tochter eines russischen Immigranten und einer Mutter aus New Jersey.
Nach einem Ingenieursabschluss an der Johns Hopkins University besuchte Michael Bloomberg die Harvard University, um einen MBA zu erlangen. Nach Studienende ging Bloomberg 1966 zu Salomon Brothers (heute: Morgan Stanley Smith Barney), wo er schon sechs Jahre nach seiner Einstellung 1972 Partner wurde. Als Salomon Brothers 1981 aufgekauft wurde, wurde er zum Austritt bewogen und bekam für seinen Anteil am Unternehmen rund zehn Millionen US-Dollar Abfindung. 1982 holte Bloomberg Merrill Lynch als Investor.
Daraufhin gründete Bloomberg noch im selben Jahr die Finanzdaten-Agentur Bloomberg L.P., mit der er offenbar, vor allem in den Jahren des Börsen-Booms, ein mehrere Milliarden Dollar umfassendes Vermögen verdiente. Später erweiterte er seine Firma um Bloomberg Television und bietet nun auch Online-Handel, Fernsehen und Radio an.
Im Jahr 2001 gewann Bloomberg die Bürgermeisterwahl von New York City und trat die Nachfolge von Rudolph Giuliani an (mit einem symbolischen Gehalt von einem US-Dollar). Um nicht in den Vorwahlen antreten zu müssen, wechselte der Demokrat Bloomberg vor der Wahl die Partei und trat den Republikanern bei. 2005 wurde er mit 58 Prozent wiedergewählt. Im Dezember 2006 stellte Bloomberg einen langfristig angelegten Plan zur nachhaltigen Entwicklung New Yorks (PlaNYC 2030) vor, in dem u. a. eine Innenstadtmaut für Manhattan enthalten ist.
Am 20. Juni 2007 gab Bloomberg bekannt, dass er die Republikanische Partei verlassen und als unabhängiger Politiker arbeiten werde. Die Wahlkämpfe finanzierte er größtenteils aus eigener Tasche. So investierte er 75 Millionen US-Dollar in seinen Wahlkampf für das New Yorker Bürgermeisteramt.
Im Kontext der Finanzkrise ab 2007, die sich von den USA ausgehend weltweit ausbreitete, erregte Bloomberg mit der Forderung nach einem neuen New Deal Aufmerksamkeit. Dies war insofern bemerkenswert, als Bloomberg bis dahin für seine fiskalkonservative und wirtschaftsliberale Haltung bekannt war.
Das Forbes Magazine schätzte Bloombergs Vermögen im März 2013 auf 27 Milliarden US-Dollar, fünf Milliarden mehr als im Vorjahr. Damit ist er der reichste aktive Politiker der Welt. Er wird seit 1987 in der Liste der Milliardäre geführt. Weltweit nahm er in der Forbes-Liste den 13. Platz ein, auf der Liste der reichsten Amerikaner kam er im September 2012, wie in den Vorjahren, auf Platz 10.
Im Juni 2010 schloss er sich der philanthropischen Kampagne The Giving Pledge der Milliardäre Bill Gates und Warren Buffett an und versprach, mehr als die Hälfte seines Vermögens zu spenden.
