The firm was founded in 1989 and formerly known as Santander Asset Management SGFIM SA. Headquartered in Lisbon, SAM manages investment funds for individual and institutional clients.

BBVA Asset Management SA SGIIC (BBVA-AM) is the asset management subsidiary of Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria SA (BME: BBVA, ADR: BBVA) in Spain. Founded in 1979 as BBV Gestinova, the firm became BBVA Gestión in 2000 when BBV Gestinova and Argentaria Gestión merged and was rebranded as BBVA-AM in 2008. They are headquartered in Madrid and manage pension plans and participate in the Latin American markets of Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina. BBVA-AM also manages a range of investment mandates for insurance companies, employment plans and corporate clients through their platform in Luxembourg.

Santander AM manages a volume of assets for both individual and institutional clients, as well as for Santander Group subsidiaries in all geographies.
