The Group's principal activity is to provide non-life insurance and reinsurance services including automobile, aviation, burglary, commercial credit, compulsory automobile liability, all risks, fire, liability, machinery, marine, nuclear energy and personal accident. The Group's subsidiaries and associated companies are involved in the following businesses: Non-life Insurance and Life Insurance services. The Non-life Insurance operations include non-life insurance underwriting, assets investment/management. The Life Insurance operations include life insurance underwriting, assets investment/management. As on 01-Apr-2008, Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Co Ltd. performed a share transfer to become a holding company which works to improve corporate governance of the entire group and plays a vital role in developing group strategy, distributing management resources, auditing and monitoring its group companies and the overall administration of the entire group. It also plays a central part in maximizing the aggregate potential of the group by improving business management, pursuing group synergy, accelerating decision making and nurturing employees through a diverse business/human resources systems.

It operates through the following segments: Domestic Property and Casualty Insurance, Overseas Operations, and Others. The Domestic Property and Casualty Insurance segment handles fire, marine, accident, automobile and automobile damage liability insurance services. The Overseas Operations segment provides the non-life insurance solutions to clients outside in the Japan. The Others segment consists of financial and risk-related services.
