The New Interdisciplinary School (NIS) is a nonprofit early childhood learning center established in 1976 in Yaphank, NY, serving children from birth to age five. NIS provides therapeutic and educational services tailored to the needs of children and their families in an inclusive environment. Programs include special education with integrated and self-contained classes, the Autism Interdisciplinary Model (AIM) for children with autism spectrum disorder, universal pre-kindergarten, nursery/preschool, licensed child care for ages 6 weeks to 5 years, early intervention, and enrichment activities such as adaptive physical education, STEM, social skills training, and animal-assisted therapy. The school offers occupational, physical, and speech therapy, psychological counseling, and nursing, all aligned with individualized education plans. NIS maintains a non-discriminatory policy and promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion. It operates from a 35,000-square-foot facility, supports over 400 individuals, and is licensed and overseen by state and county agencies. The school relies on donations and community support and engages in research collaborations to validate and improve its educational models.
